Crush Me

Ladies, we all know someone like her. She may be an acquaintance, a stranger, or a celebrity--but we are totally fascinated by her. She's incredibly stylish, beautiful, successful, and while we'd love to hate her--she's intelligent, witty and just so unbelievably cool. I guess the correct term now is a "Girl Crush." This is not a new phenomenon, but has recently become a buzz word featured in a New York times article, on VH1, and even the Today Show's Ann Curry confessed she crushes. According to the NYT article, a girl crush refers to the "fervent infatuation that one heterosexual woman develops for another woman who may seem impossibly sophisticated, gifted, beautiful or accomplished." Basically, she is just so inexplicably fab-u-lous, that you want to hang out with the girl and bask in her (for lack of a better word) awesomeness. I have talked to several of my girlfriends and have found that this platonic obsession is very common and often involves feelings of intrigue, admiration, and sometimes even envy or jealousy. The majority of gals I've talked with named celebrities such as Kate Hudson or Angelina Jolie as the objects of their affection, while others explained that some of their best friendships actually began as a girl crush. I've definitely been drawn to certain women like Gwen Stefani, Jessica Simpson, Gwyneth Paltrow--as well as my best friends--for their style, sense of humor, talent, or simply their always-perfect hair. But, it doesn't mean I like them like that.

Actually, the reason I'm discussing this topic is because I was describing "girl crushes" to Monte as I explained my latest infatuation with
Heather from the blog "Dooce." She is not only one of the most famous "bloggers," but is absolutely freaking hilarious, really pretty, an exceptional photographer, mother...oh and has the mouth of a sailor. I seriously can't get enough. I will obviously never meet her, and I'm not sure that I would ever want to. It would probably just make me feel all jittery, nervous and inadequate...much like a third grade crush, I suppose. So, I guess I will just continue to read her blog from afar while laughing my ass off and pretending we are BFFs.

3 Shout outs:

  • I was watching Jay Leno yesterday and Reese Witherspoon was on they show. She was talking about how her husband, Ryan Phillipe, is in a film with Clint Eastwood and how much he loves him. She then said that her father and Ryan's father bawled when they found out Ryan was starring in a film with Eastwood. They continued to talk about how men find him so fascinating and think he is so great. Possibly a male crush? Any takers?

  • Jake has male crushes all of the time ... I think he had a mad male crush on Matthew McConaughey after this dragon movie he was in. Yeah, I know, don't ask ...
